Sofia is friendly but not spontaneous. People are warm once you are introduced, and reserved until then. Most social life happens in groups formed years ago, at tables that were booked by someone who already knows everyone.
So the trick is not to be more outgoing. It is to put yourself in rooms where being new is the default rather than the exception.

- Show up more than once

Expat-only circles rotate every year as contracts end. Our rooms are deliberately mixed — locals, expats and travelers together — which is what makes friendships here last.

"Zdravei", "blagodarya", "nazdrave", "molya", "dovizhdane". Nothing warms a room faster than a newcomer trying.
A realistic first month
Week one: walk the centre, find your coffee place, get a transport card. Week two: go to one event alone — that first solo arrival is the hardest and least memorable part of the whole process. Week three: follow up with two people you actually enjoyed talking to. Week four: bring someone newer than you.

How our meetups work
Sofia Meetups is run by two best friends — one Bulgarian, one Portuguese. We host large international mixers on Saturday evenings at venues around Sofia. Everyone gets a paper icebreaker, there is no limited number of people, and there is no membership to join.
Five years in, the community is 1,600+ people strong, and most of them walked in alone the first time.
